Well....dh's 22 years are over in April, but he put in for extension....but there was a major f**k up and well, because of this we didn't find out until today that dh will leave the Army April 2008 so, he will not get his extension So his resettlement period is cut short by quite a lot and well....what the hell is he to do...he doesn't have any idea of what he wants to do, which doesn't help....and well...we just can't afford a drop in money We have a mortgage to pay and there is such thing as needing money to live on I am freaking out right now, I really am....I have just put in my university application, but god knows, I may well have to earn some proper pennies to help us survive next year....
I am just so scared of teh future right now....Army is all he knows, and well, over here in the UK it's all I know....whilst it has it's bad points, he had a steady income and did something he mostly enjoyed doing....
Oh, am just ranting, of course...

Can he not reapply for his extension? I thought army were short of men, surely they wouldn't turn away experienced soldiers?

You have my sympathies, dh and i face this in 6 years.

WHAT ABOUT THE ARMY GUARD SERVICE, MY FRIENDS DH IS IN THAT AND HE STILL GETS A GOOD WAGE AND THEY GET A ARMY HOUSE.

3andno more DH is due out in sept 09 he is going over tp MPGS for acouple of yeasr till DGD finidshes school, we keep our quarter, pay drops but not a huge amount (well depending on leaving rank)

Notyummy · 20/11/2007 14:16

Well, you have got 6 months, so it could be worse....

DH is in the military and I left 3 years ago. He needs to be very organised and go to some workshops (which are all part of the leaving package) straight away to identify what he wants to do, and what is available.

Work out what you must have to live on to allow you to see how much he will need to earn.. I assume he will get some sort of pension after 22 years??

There are lots of employers out there who really value ex-forces, but you have to be quite targeted about your job hunting and know how to market yourself.

The Guard service option depends on rank and current income. I think if you are a SNCO or above it would involve a large drop in salary from what I saw of the wages when I was looking in the job hunting magazines.

We don't live in Army Quarters, we bought our own house 2 1/2 years ago. And dh is a Sgt. so the drop in wage would be to much to take if he went on to the Army Guards...!
It really pees me off that it was their faffing etc...that meant that dh couldn't find out earlier if he was getting out or not....afterall, they are meant to have a whole year of resettlement time....grrr....he gives them 22 years and that is the thanks he gets....on a positive note, of course, it means that he won't have to move to Germany to rejoin the regiment and won't have to go to Iraq next year....I just wish we had a little more time to get our head around this, sigh
And Amber, don't think he can reapply for extension...what annoys me is, that they should have treated it as if he was doing his resettlement...but of course, there is never time to go on courses, and others can't do his Job currently, and yaddayaddayadda...
anyway thank you for your replies....
