I 'was' a forces sweetheart - I wrote some years ago in response to an article in a woman's magazine asking for pen-pals for guys in the Gulf war - going back to the 1990's...I wrote a 'bluey' and addressed it to 'any soldier' etc - my dh received it and after many weeks found the courage to write back....by which time he'd gone back to his base in Germany after the Gulf War had finished. He then came back to the UK and we met on a blind date....I can remember he was extremely nervous. He was going through a messy divorce at the time and was very much 'once bitten, twice shy'....

We married in 1994, have two children and we're very happy!

Ahhh that's so sweet. I love happy endings!
And such a lovely story to tell your children too.

Yes it is a lovely story...but it took dh ages to trust a girl again - his ex completely emptied their bank account whilst he was serving in the gulf and left him with huge debts and a flat that she trashed! He tried to commit suicide at one point which is very sad.

He's told me lots of harrowing stories about the 6mths he spent on the front line in the Gulf but the worst story and the most tearful was when he flew back to Germany and all his colleagues had someone there to meet them at the airport - my dh had nobody because whilst away his ex had run off with a bloke from the RAF! I could just see my dh stood there, filthy dirty, extremely exhausted etc and no one to meet him - it broke my heart when he told me ....
