What's the dresscode? Is it less formal than a ballgown, ie, evening dress? Can it be a cocktail knee length dress or does it need to be longer?

What are the men wearing? If it's suit then cocktail dress, if it's black tie then long ball gown. Not sure what sort of event it is though? Members of what? The mess? More info and cinders, you shall go etc etc

Sorry, yes mess members guest night. They'll be wearing mess dress, but I think it may be less formal than ball nights

I would wear evening dress then, long dress with shoulders covered. Strictly speaking as a guest you don't need covered shoulders but I think it's a good idea. Have fun!!

can a long dress be classed as mid calf length?

Long means to the floor!
Ask the mess member, some messes are stricter than others.
