I hope you don't mind me posting here to ask this .

My DH an I are attending his regimental reunion in July and it's also a huge anniversary for them. One of the events a ceilidh and everyone is to wear Mess Dress. DH is all kitted out but what on earth does that mean for me?

Evening dress, cocktail dress, covered shoulders?

I'm new to this as DH had left the army 18 months before we met so I'm hoping you can help Smile.

TIA

Not yummy which mess? I have worked at a few trisevice bases and may be able to advise

MrsSnaplegs · 16/02/2011 08:35

Pm me to protect location

I remember a very drunken dinner, all the men moved round at each course, and the band came in to play - marched round and stopped behind my chair. "Why have they stopped here" I asked the stranger next to me "er, well I'm in charge".

Given that this exchanged followed my (I would like to think winsomely gauche but probably just slurred) questioning about decorations on epaulettes "oh I SEE- you get 3 pips and then a crown, it's just like monopoly houses and hotels isn't it" it was my last dinner with that regiment!

notyummy pm'd you back

crumpet Grin Very funny - but yep it is like monopoly! Hate the RAF ones as they look like bar codes and you have to be really close to work out who they are and if you should be saluting.

Milngavie · 16/02/2011 10:46

DH thinks it's probably Sgts mess.

Thanks for the Pm Mrssnaplegs and apologies for the slight hijack OP!

DH had aleady asked around on my behlf before he got my email as he 'knew I would be stressing'Grin Apparently all the ladies he checked with are going long so that is good!

MrsSnaplegs · 16/02/2011 16:24

milngavie If it's Sgt's mess you may get away with ballerina length, especially if DH is retired. Would also still plan for shoulders covered partly as some of the older messes can be really drafty in places.
Hope you have a great time , let us all know how you enjoy it Grin

notyummy - isn't that the same mess my DH is at (think we chatted about it)? DH is only 'letting' me go to the July ball - he says he wants to be at home at the weekends or he'll miss the kids so I haven't been to any dinners yet.

notyummy · 16/02/2011 19:19

It isnt on a weekend Vintage - but the only reason I can go is because it is half term up here when the event happens. Usually I would be at work and dd at school
