Blimey - DH literally gave removals form to signing WO to fax to GMRS last week and considering we're not moving until August, we have the removals surveyor coming round next Monday!!!

Now why can't Modern Housing solutions be that nippy??? Grin

Make sure they do a FULL assessment - they rushed ours and had to leave stuff behind eg piano and lounge furniture Shock They have also recently changed the contract so where they used to send 6 blokes to do a full pack in a day they sent us 2 to do it over 2 days with a 3rd day to unload but no unpack! Great when I was then 8 months pregnant Hmm

Chulita · 13/02/2011 20:13

just don't buy anything big between now and then!

mrssnaplegs we've only ever had 2 or 3 people to pack but they manage it in a day (we are lower down the ladder though)

Chulita · 13/02/2011 20:14

oh, and ditto the FULL assessment, they sent a tiny van lorry for our move last October and then said they'd have to leave our garden stuff behind Hmm ... or maybe you just need to bring a proper removals truck instead of a transit van to move an entire house-load...

vintageteacups · 14/02/2011 00:17

Blimey - thanks ladies Smile.
Mrssnaplegs 6 blokes hey.....although for all of our moves, even if we had been allocated 9 blokes, I don't think they could have moved any slower if they tried!

Can't believe chulita they sent you a transit van Hmm!

Yes - I found out they had changed contracts - the removals company is one we've had before and they were very good FWIR.

so did they go back and pick up the rest mrsnsaplegs?

Uh no we had to get a friend with a van to get the piano and local council for the furniture - we needed a new one really but are making do with the sofa beds in the front room for now!
Man with a van most senior removal man ever - currently head of his Corps!!

mrsmooey · 16/02/2011 12:51

Yes do make sure they do the survey properly- the last 2 we have had a nightmare and out last move- on moving day they turned at at 12 noon.... with a transit van as they had no driver- and apparently it wa our problem and then they stuff they did pack was shockingly packed- and then they attempted to dump all the house furniture in the lounge and run- claiming that was all the contract required..... so when we argued.. they begrudgingly took some of it upstairs but damaged a lot of stuff in the process!

So make you are clear about your needs but also your expectations and also that you know the regulations and what they have been paid for!!!!! I fear that over the coming years removals are going to get worse and worse!

Good luck!

That sounds hopeful then mrsmooey Wink!

I have to say, they have never unpacked even though they are contracted to. DH always lets them crack on unloading and putting in correct rooms whilst he and I (and normally MIL) grab stuff out of the boxes to give them back to take away so we're not left with it all in the garage for months!

In October though MS shipping lost the contract and it's now a new company (GRMS) so looking forward to seeing how good the removals firms they use are. We are having Bishop's Move, who we have had before but we've moved so often I can't remember which were good and who wasn't.

I do remember one firm wrapping up cooking utensils (like plastic pasta spoons) in a layer of paper per item and then putting my lovely collection of Natwest Piggies just in the box unwrapped, clinking against each other. amazingly, they were all fine!

I will buy them sandwiches and cakes perhaps to bribe them into doing it nicely Grin

mrssnaplegs when you said make sure they do a full assessment, he arrived today at 15:15 and left at 16:25 !!! He even put up the step ladder and went up the loft (which I didn't think they were allowed to do?)

Very thorough indeed - I now know he has two cats, one of whom is called Hector and that he takes his wife tea in bed every morning. Ds said afterwards that I should marry him as then I wouldn't need to keep asking daddy to bring me tea in bed Grin

well - let's hope they don't just send a van to put our stuff in!!!
