fedupworking · 06/02/2011 16:18

What is it you want to know, I don't live in Holywood but in Bangor 15mins down the road from Holywood. (although not in forces but my son is )

YesPleaseDrChristian · 18/03/2011 19:18

Loved the 2.5 years we were there.

scaryteacher · 18/03/2011 20:20

What's it like there atm? Have been invited to a wedding there is August. Dh needs to read the current security brief, but can't get on the Defence intranet where he works,

midori1999 · 22/03/2011 15:08

Well, there are security protocols and certain areas are OOB, but we pretty much just carry on as normal tbh. I have a lot of Northern Irish friends due to showing my dogs and quite a lot of wives have jobs locally where their colleagues know their husbands are in the forces. It's impossible to keep things like that a secret long term.

There are also lots of English (and other nationalities) people living over here noe anyway, so it's not so obvious that if you're not Northern Irish you are somehow related to the forces.

BaresarkBunny · 24/03/2011 16:54

Am in Lisburn and I love it here. Have been here three years and luckily DH is posted here for another three. I really want to stay here it's brilliant...well apart from the weather cause thats pretty rubbish.

scaryteacher · 24/03/2011 18:25

Wedding very near you Baresark...presumably OK security wise?

LauraSmurf · 24/03/2011 18:53

I am from NI (but no longer live there, no teaching jobs see), and i have to say i am so jealous!

I hope that you will find the character of NI is a friendly, welcoming place.

I have a few RAF and army friends who have been posted to various NI posts over the years. THey all say that the initial security briefings etc are scary, but once they settle in, they realise a lot of it is just in case, worst case scenario stuff. All 6 of them say they would go back in a hearbeat, 2 actually petitioned to stay longer!

I really hope you love my beautiful country!

PS you MUST try chinese from 'The Water Margin' in Holywood. It looks like a little small odd place. It is AMAZING!

BaresarkBunny · 25/03/2011 11:11

All ok here just normal precautions really. No saying that that husbands are in the Forces etc.

scaryteacher · 25/03/2011 17:51

It's a Forces wedding Baresark!

BaresarkBunny · 27/03/2011 21:57

Ahhhhhh Are they wearing uniform as thats quite unusual.

Advice would be no wearing uniform to and from wedding and be careful about talking about the forces when travelling. When we are travelling we are not allowed to use the army holdalls, also black cabs are a big no no.

Are you getting picked up at the airport, if not I give you some Lisburn taxi numbers that are recommended if you like?

scaryteacher · 28/03/2011 08:34

Doesn't say uniform on the invite, so I presume not. If you could pm me some taxi numbers that would be great. We are trying to decide whether to go or not, as we are not in UK, and 15yo ds hasn't been invited, so logisitics are problematic as is cost (can't see huge amounts of change out of £750 tbh, and I have plans for that!).
