question for submariners' wives

I was wondering if there was any truth in the oft-stated belief that submariners always produce girl babies. The few I've known have all had girls, except one family who adopted and one following a PJHQ posting.

I am not married to a submariner, but have 2 friends who are and they both had one of each!

scaryteacher · 02/10/2010 13:07

1: Submariners don't produce babies, their wives/partners do. There are no female submariners.

2: Dh submariner - we have a boy
Db submariner - 2 boys
Ds's godmas's husband submariner - 2 boys, 2 girls
Friends submariners - even split

3: dh very much at sea when ds conceived (WEO HoD job). I was surprised to get pregnant given the sea time they were doing.

Sorry about the careless use if language; I meant producing the sex, not gestating the actual baby.

Thanks for the responses!

dh is a submariner. we have 2 boys!

luciemule · 09/10/2010 12:25

what is the science behind the sub-mariners having girls?

scaryteacher · 09/10/2010 12:36

No hyphen Lucie please. The are submariners, not lesser mariners!

The thinking is (or so I was told) that it is the nuclear bit, otr it could be that pressure makes a difference when the boat is dived. The nuclear bit is why women aren't submariners as the RN doesn't want to get sued if a pregnant women goes to sea in a boat and the baby subsequently has problems. After all, going to see with a nuclear reactor in close proximity to you may not be good when pregnant.

luciemule · 09/10/2010 14:07

sorry - submariners Wink

notyummy · 09/10/2010 15:38

There is exactly the same story about aircrew who fly the Tornado F3 - the powerful radar will 'do' something to your sperm and make you have girls apparently.

DH had just left the F3 fleet to do something else when DD was conceived, so not sure if it is true or not!

fedupwithdeployment · 11/10/2010 16:22

DH is a submariner...and we have 2 boys! From anecdotal knowledge, I would say it was an old wive's tale!

fedupwithdeployment · 11/10/2010 16:23

PS One was conceived when he was 3 months into an appointment on HMS Sceptre. The other was during a shore job, but he spent most of my pregnancy on board another sub.

scaryteacher · 12/10/2010 08:20

My dh was also an S boat man for a while, then on to Ts. Has just finally come off SM pay. Can't believe it's been 6 years since he was last involved with boats.

fedupwithdeployment · 12/10/2010 10:25

Ah yes, the loss of submarine pay...we are about to have that. However, as it is related to promotion, I think it will just about balance out. I would say there is a fairly significant chance of my DH knowing your DH, Scareyteacher...and my BIL is a WEO Cdr, so perhaps even greater chance there!

mollycuddles · 12/10/2010 10:30

Dh is an ex submariner and pre ttc he was convinced he was either subfertile or could only have girls. Well we now have 1 ds and 2 dds so doesn't seem to be true here either.

scaryteacher · 12/10/2010 17:38

Depends if you were Plymouth based fedup and if your dh was on boats about 6-7 years ago running from Guz, then yes, in the WE world, he would have had to have dealings with my dh.

Promotion - I wish! A certain Cdre who got friendly with the bottom of his swimmimg pool put the kybosh on that one.
