Inspired by this thread but skint i went to the library and got both vaguely middle eastern food books out.

One is the Nadia Sawalha stuffed vine leaves saved my life. It's not bad, esp as it has a recipie for beetroot dip, which we had at a lebanese restaurant once and were bowled over by it. Though there's a bit too much of the "aunty's shepherds pie" type of thing for my liking. Still, quite a bit i'd like to cook.

The other is called "modern mezze" by anissa helou, and it's great! Lot's of basics, inc spice blends and descriptions of ingredients. It also covers regional variations of the dishes. Very little of the annoying (imo) "british dish with arabian twist" stuff. Being mezze it doesn't cover much in the way of mains, so not comprehensive, but a good introduction.
