Cupcakes - am I the only one who does not 'get' them?

Can someone please explain all the fuss. They just seem like super-sized, super-sweet, super-expensive sponge cakes to me. I have made quite a few myself hoping that I'd be blown away but I have to say I prefer muffins any day. All that buttercream & stuff very sweet IMHO. So what's the appeal, they are obviously very popular as people have them at weddings etc.

I'm from the US originally and, well, there have been cupcakes for ages there.

So I don't get what all the fuss is, either.

They're, well, little cakes with frosting.

BFD.

I like a nice little cake with buttercream on.

But don't see why it's a big deal.

5inthebed · 29/06/2010 12:10

I don't like cupcaks, the butter icing on them is icky.

flibbertigibbert · 29/06/2010 13:43

I'm so bored of them being really hyped up. I'd much rather have a piece of proper cake - some lemon drizzle or something like that which has some flavour to it other than just sugar.

I really don't like the towers of cupcakes instead of wedding cakes. They just don't seem special enough to me.

They're always too big too. What happened to fairy cakes, or buns as my mum calls them?

expat i love BFD!

The point of cupcakes is not that they taste nice (they are horrid) but that you can play with the decorations and feel creative and Goddessy.

IMO, carrot cake cupcakes with cream cheese frosting are the nicest cupcakes you can make - you can colour the cream cheese frosting a tasteful shade of light pink, and put a sugar rose in the middle

expatinscotland · 29/06/2010 18:26

They're just cake! They're cake in an American tin.

BFD.

What's not to 'get'?

They are a cake option, you can prefer this option or another.

I was unaware of cupcake 'hype'.

ItNeverRainsBut · 29/06/2010 18:56

I wasn't aware of any hype either. Plus they have been around forever here, too, except they used to be called fairy cakes.

MoonFaceMama · 29/06/2010 18:58

Don't worry. Cup cakes are passe now any way. According to man from markses on the food prog on r4 the other week. Apparently it's all about whoopie pie now.

They are buns in our house.

southeastastra · 29/06/2010 18:59

i don't but not a cake person

Rollmops · 29/06/2010 19:19

Hear hear, OP. Never liked them, too sweet, too boring, too ...eer...blah.
Mini Rollmops' twins will be deprived of the said concoctions for the foreseeable future.
