How far in advance can I frost cupcakes?

DS has requested cupcakes for his birthday party. I'd prefer to frost them the day before but will it go off if it's got stuff like butter and cream cheese in it?

Also, has anyone got a really good frosting recipe please?

tbh i'd be inclined to make the cupcakes ahead and freeze them
and also make the icing the day before then ice on the day
but if you have space in your fridge they would keep overnight just fine
250g cream cheese
150g butter
400g icing sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
bring both cream cheese and butter to room temp before mixing
this will generously ice 12 cakes

Thanks! No room in fridge for cakes so will make the frosting the day before. I assume I need to bring it up to room temp before I use it?

if you use butter icing (4oz butter, 12oz icing sugar, splash water) you can freeze the cupcakes iced.

Really?

bring the frosting up to room temp before icing the cakes as you'll struggle to coat them otherwise
as debka says buttercream iced cakes can be frozen
