I saw Rafi's Spicebox mixes recommended on a curry paste thread and they are soooooooo good

Thank you MN!

We are curry snobs (oh yes) and not easily impressed but so far the jalfrezi, rogan josh and dahl have been superb. Still got korma and yellow curry mixes to sample.

what did you order?

LowLevelWhinging · 23/06/2010 21:55

ahem, what didn't I order?

There was definitely:
thai yellow
madras
rogan josh
jalfrezi
saag gosht
tarka dahl
korma

and maybe a couple more...

It was my dad's birthday so I got a load for him and dished a few out to mates as well to make the postage worthwhile (well that's my excuse).

Have you tried them?

no but am looking at your link. Did you order individual packets of spice?

cornsilk5793 · 23/06/2010 21:59

they do actual curries! How does that work then?

LowLevelWhinging · 23/06/2010 22:08

OK, just had to check I'd done the right link!

The photos show the cooked dish, but what you're ordering is packets of ready mixed spices to add meat/veg/pulse to.

The ones I've tried were packets of spice pastes with whole spices and stuff. You then add a kilo of ingredients (so each sachet will serve 6-8 ish) and a tin of tomatoes/yoghurt/coconut or whatever you fancy.

it's kind of like the convenience of a jar without the crappy sugary bland flavour that you get in most jars. Good for when you get home from work too tired to cook.

Very fragrant and tasty results, and I SWEAR I am not on commission!

Oh I get it now! I just don't know what to get!

LowLevelWhinging · 23/06/2010 22:12

what would you order in a restaurant?

If you're a dahl person, soak the lentils first (it comes as spices and lentils) as the yellow split peas too forever to soften.

took

I have never had dahl - might have to try it! usually order a medium type dish.I'm a big bhuna/Rogan Josh fan.

LowLevelWhinging · 23/06/2010 22:47

OK the dahl was a bad example because it took a lot more water and time than the instructions said.

But the jalfrezi and rogan josh were a doddle and delicious!
