FOr my dd, I made a victoria sponge cake, made some pink butter icing and covered it, then got Waitrose tub of pink decorations and used them - pink elephants round side, pink balls to make a flower on top, pink sugar in petals of flower and pink and white sugar blobs round outside. Looked very pretty!

This is my cake essbee - it looked a bit pinker in real life.

Not girly I know, but you say she likes bugs. I made a bug cake once. Made it log shaped, covered in choc fudge icing, and decorated it with stuff like, foil wrapped ladybird, sweetie snake from Woollies, spider made from black paper, and other assorted insects which I can't remember now! I added a sugar mouse at the bottom. Think I used a chocolate swiss roll for basic cake. Made icing swirly like a log.

Or what about a butterfly - cut a sponge in half vertically down the middle and stick together the other way round iyswim to make butterfly shape then ice and decorate. Easy peasy!

I did something similar to that last year. Round cake covered in rolled white fondant, with pink and white marshmallows around the edge and smaller towers topped with upside down ice cream cones. Used cut down wafers for doors, black coloured fondant for windows and stuck on lots of silver sugar balls and ready made flowers to tidy/pretty it up.

Good luck - I'm also on the look for ideas for dd's 4th in a few weeks !

One really easy idea is to make a big round sponge, then drape it with white ready roll icing to look like a table cloth. "Set" the table with a tiny tea set, put a little fairy cake in the middle with a candle stuck in and then sit barbies around it. It's a doddle but looks as if it took ages!
