Middle-East-Inspired Barbecue..?

CSLewis · 10/06/2010 16:05

We're having about fifty people over for a BBQ to celebrate DD1's 1st Holy Communion, and I was thinking of going for a Middle-Eastern style spread. Here are my ideas so far:

Home-made Beef-burgers (not Middle Eastern, just essential!)
Spiced lamb patties (cumin, coriander, etc) to be eaten in pitta bread with tzatziki and salad
Slow-cooked shoulder of lamb, finished on barbie, then shredded to make home-made doner kebabs
Spatch-cocked chickens in a couple of marinades
Sausages (British, essential)
Tabbouleh
Greek Salad
Tzatziki
Houmous/Taramasalata with bread/crudites
Aubergines/Courgettes bbq'd with minty olive oil and lemon dressing
Maybe a chick-pea salad thing?
New potatoes, maybe roasted?

Anything else? All ideas welcome!

Lots of flat bread....
pomegranate seeds to sprinkle decoratively on salads etc...
pomegranate molasses to baste chickens with...
bunches of fresh radishes (v refreshing and delicious to nibble...)
you could try and get the little lebanese sujuk spicy sausages (beef I think) which can be delicious...

Otherwise you sound as though you have it sorted!

The lebanese sausages sound good - I wonder if my local Turkish shop would have some? Does one buy them already cooked, or would I bbq them? I could do them instead of some spicy-marinated cocktail sausages to pick at while everything else is cooking...

Merguez (lamb sausages from Algeria I think) are luvverly. They do them here: Sausage Shop.
