Urgent help! What went wrong with my bread dough?

I put on my breadmaker to do some dough for rolls as usual. I forgot it was on so it got left beyond its finish time. When I took it out, it had obviously risen way too high so I "worked" it, pounding it down before shaping the rolls. But before I had finished, it changed texture and became a sticky mess even though I added flour. I managed to scrape it off my hands into rough round shapes and have left it to rise, but am I wasting my time? Is it going to be horrible? What went wrong??

It should be fine. By reworking it you will have reinvigorated the yeast, providing it with oxygen and food again so it should get going soon enough and you'll be fine. You probably didn't need to add the flour but won't do much harm. Well proved dough should be sticky..it's the gluten working and that's what will make it rise in the oven.

Hope it's tasty!
