How can I tell if this Chicken is off?

Was planning on making roast chicken tonight. I have just opened it up and it is a bit whiffy and slimy on the bottom. I really don't think I want to cook it - does this sound off to you?

sell by date is tomorrow and it is quite a pricey Waitrose Free Range Corn Fed one. (Not that this should make a difference as to if we eat it or not, it is just I would expect better )

If it smells don't use it, and take it back.

How whiffy and slimy?

I find chicken can be a bit of both and still perfectly fine.

Give it a rinse and check again (though be careful to disinfect anywhere chicken or rinsing water has touched afterward)

Really quite smelly. I am temporarily storing it in the microwave while I decide (don't want to put it in the fridge or the cat to get it), and when I opened the door the pong was pretty rancid. The bottom is white and slimy.

I really don't want to eat it, so am calling Ocado to complain, and get a refund.

I have nothing else in the house though as this was supposed to last us for the next couple of meals. Will have to raid the freezer.

Best idea. You will probably get a refund plus a free chicken!!

Like mugglewump I find it can be a bit smelly on opening but then OK on airing IYSWIM. If it's in date and you've stored it properly it may be fine.

No I had chicken that smelt was slimy and in date and it was def off.

I would return it.
Although I could not be arsed myself.

muggglewump · 27/05/2010 18:32

It sounds off then.
I've had in date chicken like that and binned it.
Order a takeaway.

winnybella · 27/05/2010 18:35

I had a chicken like that a week ago- the difference was that I did roast it. It tasted awful and still smelled horrible.

Thanks everyone, definitely throwing out. DH has the weakest constitution of anyone I have ever met, and only has to look at something out of date to be ill.

I have spoken with the lovely lady at Ocado and she has refunded me the cost of the chicken plus £5 .

Doesn't solve the problem of dinner. It is my birthday tomorrow and I was hoping to eat crap treat myself then, rather than tonight. Never mind - throw caution to the wind!
