Is it normal for a 10 month old to signal he's had enough by gagging?

Sorry for the stupid title but couldn't think of the right way to phrase it!

My 10 month old is a very good eater, although is only just beginning to get the hang of finger foods so is quite late in that respect. My issue is that he'll eat until he starts gagging on a mouthful of food and if I try him with any more he will usually gag again. I take this to mean he's had enough, although can't understand why he continues to open his mouth for the spoon if he's had enough? Friend's babies clamp their mouths shut or turn away when they're full!!!

It doesn't sound as if he's gagging because he's full to me, especially if he's still opening his mouth for the spoon. Perhaps you're offering the spoon again a bit too quickly after he gags - maybe giving a few extra seconds for him to settle himself might be worth a try.

DS does a similar thing and am also not sure why - although he might do this at any stage of the meal!
You could try offering him a drink when he gags, wait a few mins then offer more food?
