DS and I have just made our own Mr Whippy style ice cream in just 10 mins and it was really good. Ds reckons it was the best ice cream he's ever eaten and I am now officially the best mum ever...

1 cup whole milk
tsp vanilla extract
1 big tablespoon Sugar

poured into a resealable freezer bag

lots of ice cubes
2 tablespoons salt

put in another bag

milk mixture bag goes inside the ice cube bag and then its sealed again too.

shake shake shake for 10mins

eat eat eat for 2mins

Does it have to be sugar, would sweetener work?

emkana · 20/05/2010 22:22

.

BikeRunSki · 20/05/2010 22:22

Oooh, someone posted this recipe/experiment last summer, but it was in Chat and dissapeared before I got round to doing it. I think you can add cocoa powder too.

Thank you

zanz1bar · 21/05/2010 11:16

Wow that is just brilliant will be eating icecream by 3.45pm if I get the kids making it asap after school.

ginnny · 21/05/2010 11:43

We bought ds2 an ice Cream maker for his birthday last year and it is exactly the same method as this just with more plastic tat. He's used it once
Should have saved my money.

AndieWalsh · 21/05/2010 11:53

That's cool. Gonna try it at the weekend.

Klerka · 21/05/2010 12:00

Kids' experiment?? ... well DD is only 5 months old. I will try it for her to make sure it's safe! Thanks!

llareggub · 22/05/2010 13:14

Gah.

This isn't a good idea with a leaky freezer bag!

FrozenChocolate · 22/05/2010 14:01

2 tablespoons of salt? Bloody heck that's a lot. Is that one portion of ice cream?

FrozenChocolate · 22/05/2010 14:03

Oh. Just read it properly. As you were.

pollywollydoodle · 22/05/2010 14:18

have just tested it (just to see if it will work for dd later, you understand)...it's great!

(mind you american mum with tips for using it to educate your child is a bit annoying)

nighbynight · 22/05/2010 15:12

sounds good.

jooseyfruit · 22/05/2010 21:44

just done this. It's amazing.
melted really quickly though.

what does the salt do though?

moondog · 22/05/2010 21:46

Salt melts ice but keeps it at freezing temp.
Americans big into this in days of yore.
I used to spend summers in an American kids' camp and we had ice cream makers to do this with the milk we had just got from the animals.
Magic!

oopsandbabycoconut · 22/05/2010 21:49

works well with chocolate milkshake too.

weblette · 22/05/2010 21:51

If you want a UK version

Works well with any flavoured milk. Have done this with my Beaver scouts and they loved it!
