they have strange whiteness on them. Are they OK?

They are uncooked grey ones. It looked as if bits hadn't yet defrosted, but I've just checked them and they are fine, mostly normal, but just with these white patches, as if someone has painted them with tippex in patches. They smell OK . . . .

Anyone else ever come across this?

I think that sounds like freezer burn. They won't poison you but those bits might be tougher than the rest.

Ooh thank you. (I love MN!) Soo, what's freezer burn?

When it's a bit too cold in the freezer.

on another point - they cook from frozen you know

IME freezer burn usually happens when the packaging isn't protective enough - like if the bag has a split in it or if the plastic is too thin and the contents are touching it so they are very exposed to the cold.

Prawns cook from frozen???! But, aren't you supposed to be everso everso careful to thoroughly defrost prawns or you might wake up dead in the night??

checks pulse

I'm still kicking - just cook them properly

i also cook frozen prawns without defrosting, it is fine, tis one of Delias 'quick tips'

you have freezer burn on them, caused by the packaging and prawns touching and getting too cold. Wont kill you, but could be tougher to chew.
