What to serve alongside steak sandwich?

Friends round for lunch tomorrow and I am thinking of getting some nice steak to do on the BBQ and serve sliced up in warm ciabatta with horseradish cream and rocket.

What can I serve alongside it? Am thinking possibly something asparagussy? Griddled asparagus? And something else?

Help!

just a rocket and tomato salad would be lovely (as long as the sandwiches are as enormous as the ones I serve )

muggglewump · 08/05/2010 21:04

Tomato salad with the best tomatoes you can get your hands on and a really good vinaigrette plus a green salad.

now chris moyles did jamie oliver a steak sandwich tother day.

jamie made a salsa out of soem tomatoes and herbs he happended to have in his manbag. no veg on the side.

agree with Martha.

moondog · 08/05/2010 21:05

Sounds great.
I'd do a green salad, asparagus and either beetroot, walnut and fetta salad or roast pepper and fetta salad.
Or maybe a grated carrot, lemon and roast mustard seed salad.

dairymoo · 08/05/2010 21:07

Ooh quick responses, thanks!

Tomato salad sounds good actually, nice and simple.

And yes my sandwiches are HUGE, need to have a vehicle for shovelling in all the horseradish cream...!

Gotta be a bit of coleslaw

Proper coleslaw not supermarket plastic stuff

dairymoo · 08/05/2010 21:15

Right, have decided.

Steak sandwiches with aforementioned garnishes.
Griddled asparagus.
Beetroot, lentil and feta salad.
Possibly some yummy tomatoes drizzled in vinegarette if I can find some good ones.

Followed by raspberries and strawberries served with a dollop of greek yogurt and a drizzle of honey.

Fresh and tasty. Can't wait.

Will try other suggestions another day!

Sounds delicious.
Remember the basil for your tomatoes and if you can get it, the thyme for beetroot and fetta (I'd leave out lentils-too havy and too much of a good thing.
Lentils an fetta-yes
Beetroot and fetta- yes

Not al lthree
(IMHO)

AnnieBeansMum · 08/05/2010 22:21

Drrooooooll....please can I come?

thereistheball · 09/05/2010 19:20

Moondog you are so wrong - feta, puy lentils and beetroot (with roasted butternut squash, tomatoes, rocket and red onion) make one of the best salads in the world, as I found out when I worked next to Selfridges food hall. You can do a good winter one with roast root veg including beetroot, watercress, puy lentils, feta or goats cheese (better with feta though) too.

dairymoo · 09/05/2010 20:40

Have to say moondog, puy lentils and flat leaf parsley worked v well!

No leftovers, a good sign.

thereistheball - I love roasted butternut squash with puy lentils and goat's cheese too.....mmmm.
