whooosh · 06/05/2010 18:26

Spanish ones taste of nothing...I get bizarrely excited when the British strawbs arrive.....Takes me back to my childhood when we would gorge on them for the season and then not see another for a year....

JodieO · 06/05/2010 18:27

Didn't think it was the season for them yet, we go strawberry picking but they aren't in season until June. I've been buying them from the supermarket but not noticed where they're from

GrimmaTheNome · 06/05/2010 18:29

The season starts early thanks to polytunnels

catinthehat2 · 06/05/2010 18:30

I don't wish to rain on your parade, but at this time of year, they will have been bolted together out of small pieces of red vulcanised rubber in a heated hydroponic greenhouse and injected with strawberry style flavouring.

It's way too early for the real sun ripened outdoor beastly thing.

Anyway you're welcome to them. Grr.

mousemole · 06/05/2010 18:33

Sonata english strawberries are AMAZING. I got them in Morrisons.

PrettyFeckinVacant · 06/05/2010 18:57

Ooh, I bought some in Sainsbury's today but haven't tasted them yet. They smell fantastic though

southeastastra · 06/05/2010 20:42

oh i thought they were really nice, didn't have to smother them in sugar

sethstarkaddersmum · 06/05/2010 20:43

top tip: don't eat them cold from the fridge - they are way better if you let them come to room temperature first.

meltedmarsbars · 07/05/2010 12:07

Catinthehat - I like the way the rest totally ignored your post!

Mine are only just flowering in the garden - not a hydroponic system in sight.

southeastastra · 07/05/2010 12:08

i didn't ignore was merely wondering what the problem was

it's too early for real strawberries . My grandmother had a garden, real strawberries come only at the end of may - begining of june

catinthehat2 · 07/05/2010 13:25

My problem with strawberries is: I don't like them!

Polytunnel, greenhouse, backgarden, imported, in season, out of season - I hate the horrid sour bouncy things. And they give me stomach pains and a red rash round the mouth. Aaaarghh!

bronze · 07/05/2010 13:26

I found some wild strawberries the other day so presumably theyre out in some places

MortaIWombat · 07/05/2010 13:32

Elsanta are the devil's work

vintage · 07/05/2010 13:59

i know a place where wild straberries grow and they dont come out till beginning of July (Scotland)

sethstarkaddersmum · 07/05/2010 14:01

Elsanta are surprisingly nice if they are properly grown and served. We got very geeky about strawberries and did taste tests last year

catinthehat2 · 07/05/2010 16:07

OK, I will come clean. I have grown some alpine strawberry plants from seed, because they actually taste of strawberries and don't give me gyp. But nobody else is allowed to guzzle them, they are my private supply from Julyish.

catinthehat2 · 07/05/2010 16:09

I am ignoring Sethstarkadder's approving comments about Elsanta. I am afraid they are indeed the work of the devil, and she is sorely misguided.

< prepares for roasting from the carbon footprint set >

After extensive taste tests the last two weeks, I can confirm that round here ( Kent ) the Dutch ones are far superior to the Kentish ones available from my strange fruit and veg van. I expect it'll be the Dutch strawb flavvoured msg they've added help kitten eating keyboardMy plants are also in flower so hoping for some proper ones in June.
