panicky birthday party questions

DS has 5th birthday party on sunday, last night had an actual nightmare involving making the cake... so
making a football pitch cake. have made 2 oblong sponge cakes but am I better off using butter icing for the pitch, or royal icing?
and if I use royal icing and I buy ready rolled do I put it on and then kind of paint it green or should I try and massage it green?
And does anyone have a foolproof recipe for icing that's thick enough to pipe the pitch markings and not drool but doesn't require muscles of steel to force it through the nozzle?
and can I make all of that tomorrow without it going stale or funny overnight.

And please tell me I can make rice krispie cakes today and for them to be alright on Sunday.....

I am not very calm about this at all. To make it worse it's actually DS's birthday tomorrow so I will have to spend at least some of tomorrow, you know, celebrating. And I have DH's subbuteo players to put on the pitch but the ebay goals I ordered from ebay haven't arrived so I may be up at midnight cobbling something together with matchsticks.

Buy green fondant icing if you can. It comes in a roll (or a block and you roll it out)and you just pop it over the cake
