A MARROW - are they having a LAUGH? I thought this was just a comedy vegetable for flower shows.

Does anyone have a recipe involving marrow which is TASTY?

Anything which involves using the marrow as CONTAINER does not count.

Marrows are a big disincentive for me joining a box scheme tbh. Even agricultural pests have tastebuds it seems, they are clearly a cinch to grow organically.
Bad luck mp. I'd cut the f*cker up and curry it in a nice strong sauce myself. Anything to disguise the appearance, taste and texture.

I LOVE marrow - just cooked gently and served with a hearty stew. De-lish.

What's your address?

Think I might resort to curry...

Ewww, KBear, that's our putative SE London meet scotched then. You might bring along marrow quiche...

Tinker · 29/07/2005 16:06

Hmm, I tried to do something with a marrow once (oo er) and I won't again. Isn't it just expensive water?

Sponge · 29/07/2005 16:08

Throw it away and put it down to experience. There is no way to make marrow edible.

Marina · 29/07/2005 16:09

But if MP is in one of those Stalinist we choose your veg schemes this might be the first in a long summer of marrows sponge...

Freckle · 29/07/2005 16:09

I love doing stuffed marrow (does that count as using the marrow as a container??). Split the marrow in half and scoop out seeds. Then I do a mix of whatever I fancy, such as cooking peppers, onions, mushrooms, chillies, tomatoes, etc. in herbs and spices and mix with cooked rice and cubed cheese. Fill the scooped out marrow with the mixture and then sprinkle some grated cheese over the top. Place in foil and seal. Put in oven for a good 45-60 mins, removing foil for last 20 mins (crisps up the cheese topping). It's delish.

Mind you, wouldn't have thought of doing this prior to marrying veggie dh.

KBear · 29/07/2005 16:10

Next meet-up I shall bring Marrow pie, Marrow en croute and Marrow soup.

Ewwwww, put myself off it now!!!

Tinker · 29/07/2005 16:10

The name doesn't help does it? Make one think of bone marrow.

KBear · 29/07/2005 16:11

Freckle, can I put you down for membership of the Marrow Supporters Club? You get free membership for having such a delish recipe.

Ner, you lot, I'm not alone!

KBear · 29/07/2005 16:11

Tinkerrrrrrr

yuck

WigWamBam · 29/07/2005 16:11

The only decent tasting marrow is a stuffed marrow - you could stuff it with a chilli con carne mixture, wrap it with foil, then bake it in the oven.

Marina · 29/07/2005 16:12

Personally I think bone marrow is an improvement, and that is saying something. Oh, I feel a bit yuk even thinking about the things. I bet it is humungous MP.
KBear, if you bring any of that stuff into the City I will ring my special friends at Wood St Police Station and have you cordoned off.

Freckle · 29/07/2005 16:13

Oh yes, Kbear. We grew marrow once. It was meant to be a courgette but it sort of got out of hand.

I do deliberately buy a marrow from time to time, simply to do my "bung everything in and stuff" recipe. It is lovely, especially if you make the stuffing fairly dry to offset the natural liquid in the marrow.

I remember a good recipe which involved getting rid of the inside, then cutting up the main bit and boiling it till it's soft, then mashing it with cardamom seeds.

Then you mix together yoghurt and feta or goats cheese, then you do lasagna layers of the marrow mixture and yoghurt mixture, topped with grated cheese.

I think some red peppers in there might improve it though. And perhaps serve with lamb chops!

Marina · 29/07/2005 16:14

A ringing endorsement from Dinosaur there. That nice was it?
Have they finished frisking that couple with rucksacks at Liverpool St now Dinosaur do you know?

Tinker · 29/07/2005 16:14

Freckle - even stuffing it with nice things doesn't help. Tried that and it resulted in a silent meal before I gave permission to admit that it was foul.

KBear · 29/07/2005 16:16

LOL Marina! I can't WAIT to be cordoned off by handsome coppers!

KBear · 29/07/2005 16:18

I think it's all over at Liv St now according to Sky News - apparently they were "pinned to the ground" more than frisked! It's all happening....

Marina · 29/07/2005 16:18

There are some fit young gents to be seen at Cannon St at present don't you think KBear?
Tinker, my silent dinner triumph was a pallid French Onion soup that I attempted to perk up with a spoonful of Marmite. Dh was appalled.

Tinker · 29/07/2005 16:19

Maybe they were arresetd for having a marrow about their person.

morningpaper · 29/07/2005 16:19

There's an idea, you could stuff it with explosives and sell it to a chap outside Stockwell station...

SORRY

Damn thing is big and useless. Feeling depressed now. I expect it will end up on the compost heap. They should just throw a cup of compost in the box and cut out the middle man.
