Making a monster truck - help.

Right DS1 wants a monster truck cake for his birthday.

I have a 8 inch square tin so was planning to make 2 of them, and use the second one cut in half to make the back and the cabin. Doughnuts for wheels.

Will this work? Anybody any other ideas?

I was planning to slice the cakes in half horizontally and sandwich them with butter cream.

If I make a chocolate sponge, what weights will I need and how long will it need to cook for?

Also, can I make them in advance and freeze them, or will they go manky?

I have amounts for you at home assumetheposition- will post tonight! Your cakes will freeze fine even with buttercream.

For 8in square tin:

Cream together:
6oz butter (softened)
11oz Caster sugar

Beat in:
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla

Fold in sifted:
2 1/2 oz sr flour
7oz plain flour
1 1/2 tsp bicarb
3oz cocoa

Alternately with:
9floz buttermilk (I use normal milk mixed with a tbsp vinegar, works fine)

Bake 180 (GM4) for 1 1/4 hrs.

If you have time, liquorice catherine wheels might look good as wheels- but you'd have to unwrap some and wrap them on to another to make it bigger.

Good luck, and post a picture!
