I'm trying to give up bread - what can I eat for lunch instead of sandwiches?

Just having a bit of an experiment for a week or so to see if I can go without bread - no particular reason, although I do get quite a few spots (I'm 43 ) and several people have mentioned bread might be a reason??? I dunno.

I usually have toast for brekky, sandwiches for lunch, bread with my evening meal. Aaaaagh. Really struggling with lunch ideas. I am a bit picky and don't like pasta.. What the heck ele do people eat for lunch? Baked potatoes? Salads (yawn), crackers . There must be other stuff...

Thick soups.

Make yourself a salad nicoise, with new potatoes in it.

Rice salad.

compo · 13/04/2010 20:20

ryvita

oat cakes

baked potatoes with various fillings

tonnes of different salads, you need a book from the library to get you motivated

compo · 13/04/2010 20:21

ooh and eggs - omelettes, boiled etc etc

AitchTwoZone · 13/04/2010 20:21

Sushi
Potato wedges
Rice noodles with ham and tomatoes

Pennies · 13/04/2010 20:24

blametheparents - if she's dropping the bread then she can't do beans on toast really. Stick on a baked potato with shed loads of cheese instead.

Pennies · 13/04/2010 20:24

mmmmmmm Sushi.... Good call there.

reddaisy · 13/04/2010 20:24

Chicken and avocado salad - that's what I had today. It was yummy!

bibbitybobbityhat · 13/04/2010 20:25

Erm, don't think you really meant beans on toast there blametheparents

bellavita · 13/04/2010 20:25

I have cut out bread for nearly two weeks now - have lost weight.

Lunches have been veg stirfries with a little drizzle of sesame oil mixed with soy sauce and lots of ground pepper.

Scrambled eggs.

Lots of salads with grated carrots, grapes... just to give it a different taste and pep them up a bit.

Homemade veg soups.

If you have heating-up facilities at work, you could take in leftover curry/chilli/stew/whatever else you might have made. This also has the advantages of being cheap AND making you look like an effortless domestic goddess

Salads are great, lots of variations possible there - beans, couscous, rice, mixed leaves, fish/meat if you eat those, noodles etc. One of my favourites: salmon fillet, smeared in honey and grain mustard and topped with lots of crushed black pepper, roasted in a hot oven - goes lovely cold on top of mixed leaves.

Dips and stuff to dip e.g. hummus and veg sticks.

BertieBotts · 13/04/2010 20:28

Noodle/cous cous/rice/pasta salads

bibbitybobbityhat · 13/04/2010 20:28

Half an avocado stuffed with prawn cocktail yum yum.

Chips and mayo.

Soup, soup, soup.

Ryvita - they are gorgeous, especially the dark rye.

Jacket potatoes.

Rice cakes with toppings.

Lovely Italian cold meats and olives and marinated artichokes etc.

Dolmades.

NoahAndTheWhale · 13/04/2010 20:29

Wraps?

blametheparents · 13/04/2010 20:32

Beans on plate then?!

PuppyMonkey · 13/04/2010 20:32

Cheers all. Very inspiring. I had a nice salad today at work - I just don't know whether I can stick to it forever.. I must go and get a book. Jacket spuds is good... omelettes good.

Beans on plate. Om nom nom!

bibbitybobbityhat · 13/04/2010 20:34

I think beans on a plate with a couple of Sainsbury's Taste The Difference extra chunky fish fingers on the side would be a princely lunch!

blametheparents · 13/04/2010 20:34

Just call me Nigella!

blinder · 13/04/2010 20:35

It might sound strange but porridge was my saviour when I temporarily quit wheat. Porridge for lunch will see you through till the evening.

Also seconding hummus and ryvita. Also ryvita dipped in soup is good.

I used to cook the following too as a comfort food:

sliced new potatoes, fried in tiny drop of olive oil. After a few mins add sliced onions, then add about a tbsp honey and a tbsp soy sauce along with a handful of walnuts. I can't recommend this dish enough. O M G it's good. Eat it with crisp salad leaves.

blinder · 13/04/2010 20:39

And bacon tossed into lettuce with Parmesan shavings .

PuppyMonkey · 13/04/2010 20:39

Beans and fish fingers yummeeeee.

So Ryvita are nice these days are they? They used to taste like cardboard.

Has anyone else given up bread and stuck with it? And did it make you feel better???

I think lots of the people on the Nothing Is As Good As Being Slim Feels thread are bread-free atm.

PuppyMonkey · 13/04/2010 20:45

Oh thanks Bibbity, will check that thread out. Had ignored it, because I don't really need to lose weight, it's more the general thing about feeling better in myself and seeing if it clears up my skin
