I'm trying to give up bread - what can I eat for lunch instead of sandwiches?

Just having a bit of an experiment for a week or so to see if I can go without bread - no particular reason, although I do get quite a few spots (I'm 43 ) and several people have mentioned bread might be a reason??? I dunno.

I usually have toast for brekky, sandwiches for lunch, bread with my evening meal. Aaaaagh. Really struggling with lunch ideas. I am a bit picky and don't like pasta.. What the heck ele do people eat for lunch? Baked potatoes? Salads (yawn), crackers . There must be other stuff...

Have you tried cutting out refined carbs instead?

Salad ideas-
How about sliced new potatoes and sliced boiled eggs with tuna/bacon bits

Chicken wrapped in bacon, cooked in the oven the night before, sliced on rocket salad with lovely cherry tomatoes

We often use the Old El Paso fajita sachets to marinade chicken and have that hot with green salad - roast some peppers with it as well, lovely.

Hot salads are so much nicer, so try that if you're at home

why are you giving up bread? Can't you eat wholegrain bread or is all bread tabu?

ZZZenAgain · 13/04/2010 20:49

never heard of a connection between bread and spots

PuppyMonkey · 13/04/2010 20:52

Well, I'd never heard of a connection myself ZZZen, but as I say several people mentioned it to me over the last few weeks and, yes, even wholemeal bread is a no no.

But I remain sceptical, so was just gonna give it a try and see how it goes. White bread definitely does make me feel all bloaty and trumpy afterwards.. sorry tmi

interesting. Wondering about dd now

not sure about lunch if you're at work but a big salad fills me up (goat's cheese , tomatoes, red peppers is my usual salad)

Breakfast - maybe natural yoghurt with fruit and if it isn't satisfying enough, some crunch on top - dd has 1 tbsp butter, 1 tbsp brown sugar, 3 tbsps oats cooked together over a low heat, left to cool, smashed up and sprinkled overthe yoghurt.

If you aren't bothered with weight issues - potatoes, pies - even simple turnovers, steak: In Germany rice pudding with cinnamon and sugar sprinkled on top is a school lunch (main not dessert) and quite filling

blinder · 13/04/2010 21:10

I think pastry would be out too wouldn't it? The issue being flour.

cyteen · 13/04/2010 21:28

Anecdotally, my best friend suffers from psoriasis and says her skin is loads better when she cuts out bread.

cyb · 13/04/2010 21:31

Puppy I have been virtually bread free for over amonth now and have lost weight, felt more sprightly and skin has improved, as has digestion.

For lunch instead I ahve soup and oatcakes, or a salad with feta cheese, tomatoes, ham, chicken whatever really. I used to hate salads but I bung some dressing on it an d its really nice.

Omlettes are quick too

ZZZenAgain · 13/04/2010 21:31

ok have been googling it (nothing to do emoticon) and I read bread, grains and cereals so yes of course you'd be right no flour

I used to hear a lot abuut how milk was the bad thing and to be avoided

cyb · 13/04/2010 21:31

AND ZERO TRUMPS

Actually its the sugar/yeast combo that sets me off

abroadandmisunderstood · 13/04/2010 21:35

ZZZ, I am not the biggest fan of German dark bread but had some for lunch. Dear God, the stomach pains and flatulence come 5pm!! Is it the dark rye or the obsession with seeds that got me? (sidles off to bed, hoping DH can't hear)

ZZZenAgain · 13/04/2010 21:38

I rmeember my Polish friend in Germany going on this diet which involved eating nothing but black rye bread and sauerkraut.

I said, is there a limit on how much of it you can eat? She just looked at me ike wtf
who would want to eat much of that? she lost heaps of weight after two weeks on that diet. She didn't metnion the flatulence though. Must have been grim

bibbitybobbityhat · 13/04/2010 21:47

I know we are all supposed to make our own soups from home-grown allotment vegetables and organically woven lentils, but can I just put in a word for Marco Pierre White's Glorious Indian Chicken Soup (stocked by Sainsbos). It is truly lush.

cyb · 13/04/2010 21:48

ooh yes I;ve had that. Twas delish. Asda do a poor mans version of it, I think it was A Little Chef one

BertieBotts · 13/04/2010 21:51

Oh that also reminds me, try the innocent (or some supermarkets do own brand ones too) veg pots - they are little pots you stick in the microwave and are mini portions of things like bean stew or sweet potato chilli, really filling and lots of veg etc. The innocent ones are expensive but you can sometimes get them on offer.

not sure about all bread being fattening etc (mind you here it is the spots thing).

I rmeember now when I had just given birth I ate nothing but Dinkelvollkornbrot and salad, the weight just dropped off. What on earth Dinkel is in English I have no idea some kind of wholegrain bread

will have to google - didn't give me flatulence either. It's the only German bread - apart from the potato bread that I really liked after the first year or so of trying everything out. Really like the Dinkel one

must google

bicep · 13/04/2010 22:06

i gave up bread about 6 weeks ago, Defo lost weight and feel much less bloated. Don't miss it really.

Lunch - soup, jacket potato, beans, salad (variety, whatever is around). In fact, lunches have never been so interesting!

Ivykaty44 · 13/04/2010 22:07

make your own bread instead of cutting it out, it then cuts out all the crap that gets put in brough (even expensive) shop bread. Just yeats, flour, water, sugar and salt - away you go without all the e numbers and extra salt and sugar

I would have rissotto cold or heated up

crackers and a home made creamcheese and tuna paste

casserole taken in and heated up with sliced tattys on the bottom

chilli and cous cous/ curry and cous cous

noddles with stir fryed vegtables and a little sweet chilli sauce

ZZZenAgain · 13/04/2010 22:08

triticum spelta apparently in Latin - spelt in English. Never heard of it before. I like the dinkel bread, nice flavour, bit nutty

anyway sorry back to the spots and lunch - layered things like oven baked potato and spinach or potato with sour cream and whatever seems to fit etc

CrankyTwanky · 13/04/2010 22:10

Cake?

Ivykaty44 · 13/04/2010 22:12

lava cake what you thinking cranky/

onadietcokebreak · 13/04/2010 22:14

Am joining you with the no bread challenge. I have been so ill recently and am seeing a consultant tomorrow. Guarnateed to be told to look at diet so will be def going bread free.

Keep up the ideas...esp for lunches on the go with no cooking/heating/fridge faclities

CrankyTwanky · 13/04/2010 22:16

I've just come over all Marie Antoinette!

I'm jelous tbh because with a 3 week old bread & cake is all I have time for!
