Steak and Kidney pudding, do I cook the meat first?

I have obviously never made this, I have the steak, the kidney, and some suet.

So, do I cook the meat first or do I really have to steam it for 4 hours, which is what my BeRo book says?

I looked in Delia and it seems that you don't cook it before hand- it cooks in the steam. I was surprised.

I made one a few weeks ago and you just put it together raw and then steam for 3-4 hours depending on the size.

It was quite impressive, even if I do say so myself

Made it!

Dc's complained about the kidney, but have been asked to repeat it with beef and bacon, no kidney, so it can't have been all bad.
