Do they float if they have gone off, or sink? I can't remember!!

They should sink if fresh. They will start to tilt upwards in the water as they age - if they float, bin them.

Bad eggs float, because of all the nasty gases inside.

they sink when they are fresh, i think i remember.

But don't test them until you are ready to use them as immersing them in water will affect their shelflife (so to speak)

Fantastic - thank you all so much! I can now stop chucking eggs out after a small but strange ritual of putting them in water, not being able to remember what the crack (ahem) was and binning them anyway
