Hello I'm new here, this looks like a handy site where I may just get the answer to this problem I have with my 18-month-old twins sons.
More specifically it has to do with DS eldest who has a habit of stuffing everything on his plate into his mouth making himself gag and spit it out or nearly choke in trying to swallow it. Is this utterly bizarre or normal?
In a perfect world I would (and sometimes do) feed him each piece separately not letting him have control of his plate but I can't always do that.
It isn't like his brother (who takes his own sweet time with his food) tries to steal or vica versa.

Hi Paula71, I don't know if it's normal either but my 14 month old does just the same. I do what you do ie a piece at a time.

DS2 (28 months) does this to a certain extent too - whole biscuits etc.

Welcome to Mumsnet!

My Ds 22 months also does it.

I did have that problem very briefly (like all things hopefully a phase) but dd was a bit older so I used to say "I bet you can't eat 2 beans of that spoon" and in her desire to please she slowed down! Don't suppose this helps but perhaps you could encoarage him to "be like brother and make his food last. Sorry not much help I'm sure.

What a relief! This is a great site as I no longer feel mine are abnormal in some of the things they do!!! The amount of stuff certain other mothers do not talk about but here everyone is honest!!!
Thank God! I stopped going to the mother and baby group as everyone (obviously lying) had such perfectly behaved, advanced babies!
Isn't it great to be normal!

Just to add to the numbers, my ds2 (22mths) does it as well - this morning he crammed in about 10 pieces of bacon, chewed them around then spat them out on a cane chair in the conservatory.
He does eat normally most of the time, but usually does this when he's lulled me into a false sense of security.

has anyone noticed it is almost all boys who do this?!

funny, that!
