What can I make with smoked mackerel?

It's hot smoked mackerel so is ready to eat but I can't think what to do with it besides sandwiches.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

TIA

DH likes it warmed up and piled on top of mashed potato...

fishcakes! Mmmmm....

I like putting it in fish pie

or making some rice and mixing it in to make a ready-made quick version of a kedgeree

Blitz it up with some cream cheese and a squeeze of lemon juice. Grind in some black pepper and spread on nice bread. Yum.

Had a lovely dish once at a street party thing and it was smoked mackerel baked with potaotoes and I think it was single cream.

mix with a spoonful of cream/creme fraiche and herb of choice (chives or dill I like ) then put on toast and warm briefly under grill

or mix with creamed horseradish, creme friaiche, lemon zest and parsley for a wicked chunky pate. I like this in chicory boats - very 70's

it also goes really well in a salad with pink grapefruit and watercress

yum. love smoked mackerel

Grill it, heat a tin of chopped tomatoes to which you add some herbs, and eat with brown rice and boiled broccoli.

You could make yourself sick

My DC love it - I just mix some flaked smoked mackerel with a bowl of pasta and a bit of olive oil.

Fry off some leeks add some cream cheese flake in mackerel to warm through - easy pasta sauce that my odd kids can't get enough of.

I like it flaked in salad (baby spinach ideally) with hard boiled eggs and a mustard vinigarette. Or on toast with poached egg. Am liking the sound of these other ideas too - we are big smoked mackerel fans in our house. Although I don't give it to DS (18mo) as I thought it would be too salty for him - at what age would you start giving it to kids?

Nigel Slater's potato and mackerel dauphinoise is lovely and I think is probably what spudmasher had. The recipe calls for double cream but I prefer it with single as it is so rich otherwise.

After reading this thread, we're having smoked mackerel with cream cheese and spring onions on baked potatoes for lunch tomorrow

muggglewump · 02/04/2010 18:12

Shoppings already done but I will try and remember sweet potatoes for next time. Have never baked a sweet potato before.
