Nigella's hot cross buns horrible

I'm stuck at home at the moment with dd as she has chickenpox. I thought I'd make some of nigella's hot cross buns from Feast.

Flavourless and burn't- where have I gone wrong I only cooked them for the minimum time and I followed the recipe

Yes, IME they are horrible. Have never found a really good HCB recipe though to be fair.

Caoimhe · 31/03/2010 15:28

Lots of Nigella's recipes are shit - her chocolate brownie one with 6 eggs (I kid you not) is one of the worst!

schroeder · 31/03/2010 15:33

Hmm I love those brownies though-every time I make them people go crazy. I thought maybe I'd missed something surely hcbs should have some sugar in them?

Nigel Slater's brownies are the best

I get requests to make Nigella's brownies all the time....admittedly, I cook them for longer than the recipe suggests but they are still fab.

Am not a fan of Nigella's recipes..... Always have to fiddle with them. I do, however, really love reading her books!

I'll give you my Mam's recipe for HCBs once I get home though if you want.... Delish!

my mum brought me round a pile of Nigella brownies as she made too much. I nearly weed with pleasure, they were gorgeous
I followed her Christmas cake recipe too. Tasting it when it was baked was very disappointing, but after a month in the cupboard wrapped in foil it was awesome.
I hate hot cross buns though so wouldn't make them!

I made the hot cross buns. They were shite and I threw them away and made Good Foods instead. They were like tiny burnt rocks.

hmm not tried nigella out of principle really (we see enough of her buns on te telly thank you v much) but did try Lakeland Kitchen's recipe. Were v v tasty although a little heavy, I don't think I kneaded the dough correctly that's all which made them a little stodgy as if they hadn't risen as they should've. Would recommend tho if you can make bread etc.

Am stunned at the idea of somebody NOT liking nigella's brownies... I've made them many times, and they are always a huge hit. Not to mention incredibly easy to make (if expensive, mind you I don't imagine you can make cheap and delicious brownies).

I've never tried hot cross buns at home though - it always looks like a bit too much of a faff to me, and the shop ones are usually pretty unbeatable I reckon.

Nigella's chocolate cheesecake in Feast is deeelicious. I make it for family and have to do x2 at a time.

Also her chocolate fudge cake in Nigella Bites is lovely and indulgent.

Not tried her hot cross buns.
