Chocolate rice krispies cake: What did I do wrong?

Okay, so I melted the milk chocolate with the butter in a bowl over a pan of simmering water then for some reason the the texture changed and went from liquid to grainy to squidgy after adding the golden syrup.

Thought I'd pour the rice krispies in anyway but it was impossible to stir and give a decent glossy coating. In fact, they turned out like brown nuggets rather than shiny clusters of chocolate rice krispie balls!

The chocolate treats were saved by melting some more chocolate on its own in the microwave this time and then added with the mixture. Now I have something that looks like undercoated chocolate rice krispies cake with chocolate nuggets in. I added a mini egg to hide detract from its ugliness.

Anyway, so I was hoping what should normally take about 10 15 minutes took nearly an hour because of the faffing about! Why did my mixture turn to poo?

The syrup was too cold in contrast to the hot choc... and caused granulation. Need to melt the two together (smile)

Ah, thanks Val. I'll remember that for next year's Easter fair!
