What ingredients do you consider over-rated?

I don't like Marigold vegetable stock powder. I know Nigella et al swear by it but personally I think it is no better than Kallo and have no idea what foodies think is so great about it. Does anyone know?

So.... other over-rated ingredients?

I love balsmic vinegar!

Are truffles really expensive? I used to know someone who used to get a whole truffle and just eat it slice by slice. Heavens only knows why.

SethStarkaddersMum · 27/03/2010 20:30

It's a long time since I've been to a foamy restaurant, but yes, quite.

LynetteScavo · 27/03/2010 20:32

Oh God, what am I missing out on???? I want to go to a foamy resturant!

Alouiseg · 27/03/2010 20:32

Flour in sauces, I prefer good old double cream.

Cobblers · 27/03/2010 20:33

It's just a bubbly sauce.

duckyfuzz · 27/03/2010 20:35

god I love balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil is so much fruitier than standard

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 27/03/2010 20:35

foamy restaurant

LynetteScavo · 27/03/2010 20:35

Bubbly sauce? Savoury? You mean over whisked?

I really feel like I'm missingout here.

SethStarkaddersMum · 27/03/2010 20:37

Lynette the theory is that foam means the flavours take longer to slide over your tastebuds than if it was a liquid, hence you get more of the flavour. Jellies do the same thing, but foam is trendy so you see it a lot in poncey places. A lot of the time it's just like eating green cappucino.

Kettle chips. why are they so hard that they make small children gag and get completely stuck in your teeth?

Cobblers · 27/03/2010 20:40

It's amazing what you have to do for a Michelin star these days.

SethStarkaddersMum · 27/03/2010 20:40

foamy restaurant. I'm never going to be able to get dh to go to a fancy restaurant again after I made him go there.

Would any of you be offended if I said 'what a bag of wank' about the above restaurant?
