My ds1 will be 4 on Tuesday and has said all he wants for his birthday is a chocolate cake with a candle on - he's such a lovely boy he shall have one, so can you share with me your best chocolate cake recipe or point me to it.

Mine isn't anything fancy but if i throw it together with the right slapdash attitude it always works. (if I assemble it carefully and sieve etc it doesn't rise!)

Sorry to do this in imperial measurements. I can never remember the metric equivalent!

3oz self-raising flour
1oz cocoa powder
4oz margarine
4oz caster sugar
2 eggs

Put the marg and sugar into a food processor and whizz till pale and fluffy. Chuck in the eggs and whizz some more, add the flour and cocoa powder and whizz till mixed thoroughly. If it seems a bit stiff, add half an eggshell full of warm water and pulse for a second.

Put it into a greased cake tin and bake at about 180 until done.

I did one for my DS once and used a cardboard template to put a big 2 on the top with icing sugar.

I have made thisone a few times. Its lovely & easy. Made it on Sunday & just polished the last off tonight. Really moist & gooey. My 18 month old loves it!

I would go with Deanna's recipe, I have used this one loads, it is fantastic. Very rich, so you can't eat much, but I wouldn't use any other chocolate recipe.
