Surely it would be horrid? Better to bake some fairy cakes and put it on that...

eleanorsmum · 19/03/2010 16:39

was hoping it might help the roll out stick?

don't think it would be horrid as the cake has the same butter icing in th middle...

no, you cant, willbe disgusting.

you need to put your butter icing in between cake and then your roll out icing on top.

eleanorsmum · 19/03/2010 16:45

Err, sorry to disagree with everyone, but I regularly use butter icing to stick ready roll on, they also do this for a lot of shop bought cakes!

Thanks nubbins and zapostrophe ( Ididn't think it would be disgusting as some said!) I didn't do it this time but it would have made it easier to 'glue' the cicing down! cake was a huge hit though (getting quite good at this!)

Agree with nubbins and zapostrophe
Thats how most sponge cakes are iced you put a buttercream coating on to stick the icing

BariatricObama · 22/03/2010 12:19

how could cake and buttericing every be disgusting!!!!!!!!!!

eleanorsmum · 22/03/2010 12:29

wish you lot had been around on friday! hey ho, we live and learn. i'll know for next time.

Made the mistake once of using jam to stick it as you would marzipan but it literally dissolved the roll out! very slimey mess followed! So you can see why I hesitated with butter icing!

I've used Jam before too and it was fine, it all depends how much buttercream I have left

toomuchmum · 22/03/2010 22:02

Agree with Zap, I wouldn't putting fondant on without butter icing beneath.

It helps the fondant to stick and it also makes a perfectly smooth base to allow for a perfect finish, sorry I am a fantical wannabe cake artist!! Use a hot knife to smooth the butter icing and stick the cake in the fridge for a bit to firm it up before putting on the fondant.

How weird. Every baker worth their salt uses buttercream under fondant to make it stick.
And Jam under marzipan as it doesn't dissolve as much.
