What the hell can I do with a savoy cabbage?

I always seem to buy veg that I never get round to using, even though I live on the stuff thanks to Weight Watchers Noticed a Savoy shoved at the back of the veg drawer this morning, and I'm determinded not to let it become another chunk of sweaty veg to see the inside of my bin!

So come on, anything I can do to liven it up a bit, bearing in mind my fat fighters restrictions?

ooh I love savoy cabbage - I'd just steam it, either whole for the whole family or part if just me to have with a poached fillet of salmon or something like that.

don't just boil it! Shred it and allow it to steam with just a little bit of stock or salted water in a non-stick saute pan with a lid on - allow steam to escape if it's looking too wet. If your diet will permit, saute a little finely chopped pancetta first and add the cabbage to this. Garlic also works for me. DH likes it with sauteed onions but I am not so keen. Adding butter is delicious of course but you might rule this out.

Plenty of black pepper to finish.

Left over shredded savoy is delicious in minestrone soup. (Add it at the end so that it doesn't go soggy!)

yeap fry it in butter with bacon, yum

add left over mash and you've got colcannon

choosyfloosy · 04/03/2010 15:36

savoy cabbage is G.O.R.G.E.O.U.S.

do you have an oil spray?

shred cabbage very finely; also chop 1 fresh red chili, discarding seeds. steam cabbage for 1 minute in colander over boiling water.

spray wok with oil and heat; stirfry chili for 2 mins; tip in cabbage and stirfry for 1 minute. Grind black pepper over. Tip onto plate.

[mouth is watering]

anything really - or nothing - just have the whole cabbage!

cabbage and potato is a truly joyous combo - maybe just mashed?

rice?

Lightly steam it then bake it with fried onion, bacon chunks, chopped cooked potato and cubes of cheddar or other melting cheese. About 30 mins Gas 5. Like slightly fancy colcannon. Mmmmmmmm.

justallovertheplace · 04/03/2010 16:07

make a yummy minestrone- Jamie Oliver has a great recipe

elliedodger · 04/03/2010 17:02

It is fabulous sauteed with copious amounts of butter and streaky bacon.

I find it goes really well with sausages, mashed potatoes and gravy.

mackerel · 04/03/2010 17:03

coleslaw - shred it finely, add grated carrot and shredded onion. Make a dressing with rice vinegar - or another vinegar- and a dabof oil and honey. S and P. yum.

ilovepiccolina · 04/03/2010 17:04

Five-a-side?

KnottyLocks · 04/03/2010 17:42

Boil or steam it, then stir in a spoon or two of horseradish while warm. Fabulous with beef.

SuperflousBuns · 04/03/2010 17:46

OOH make colcannon, savoy cabbage, mashed potato and spring onion, mmmmmmmm

Eve · 04/03/2010 17:49

it is miraculous for engorged boobs.

aseriouslyblondemoment · 04/03/2010 22:51

lol
that was my first reaction too
but as already mentioned it's delicious braised in chicken stock with bacon or pancetta added to it
or blanche the leaves then fill with your choice from meat, fish, veggies etc and add rice to make little parcels
again braise it in chicken stock in the oven
