Do I need to soak them before cooking them? If yes how long for?

Thank you!

gorionine · 23/02/2010 10:55

If I soak them now, will it be ok to cook them at 6ish toninght? Do they count as veg?

sadly you need to soak them overnight as you would for any dried beans etc
they're a pulse rather than a veg
were you adding them to a casserole or making a dhal?

gorionine · 23/02/2010 11:11

I wanted to make a soupe with them but will be tomorrow then

I do not soak lentils, do you?

only the puy lentils as they're a bit coarser and grittier
soup sounds lovely

Hope it will be, I only remembered that I used to like yellow split peas soup as a child when I saw the bag of them in the shop. I have a feeling I will have to "invent" a recipe from memory.

ooh yes it's real comfort food esp if it has ham or bacon in it too

gorionine · 23/02/2010 11:47

hmm you've got me thinking there now lol

I have never soaked a split pea, just boiled them in the soup for an hour or so. Work out fine for me...

gorionine · 26/02/2010 09:46

Soupe with soaked split peas was delicious! I will try to not soak them next time to see if they keep a brighter colour as all the yellow seems to have gone in the soaking water!

This is really really good.

OhFuck · 27/02/2010 13:29

Never soaked a yellow split pea in my life (but I only use them in soup). Hard boil for a good while before leaving to simmer. No problems.

gorionine · 28/02/2010 08:04

Yumyum boober, I will get hold of som halal frankfurters to use is my non-soak version!
