People with Agas ...

do you switch them off when it gets hot, and do you also have a gas or electric cooker in your kitchen?

my bf has an aga. It's never turned off. It is in a large airy kitchen though. She only has an aga.

If I had the space and the finance I would ditch my cooker and get an aga. Lovely gorgeous things!

yes we have one. we only turn it off for a few weeks in the summer, when it gets hot. which isnt very often as we live in scotland. we also have an electric oven and hob

remember you will need to have the aga off for 24 hours when it is serviced ( usually about twice a year) and it takes another day or so to heat up aagain.well ours does but its quite old

Turned off for a couple of months.
Have an electric oven and calor gas hob.
Would turn it off even if I didn't have the oven (need the hob and microwave though) as gets TOO HOT for me. I wouldn't replace the oven if it broke.

Thanks all ... we are moving to a new house with an aga shortly, and it sounds as if I will also need to get a hob and oven installed too.

We have one and also an electric hob and oven. We have switched ours off recently as there was too much heat.

But will be lovely in the winter (we moved here in March).

have an electric hob and oven bit that attaches to the aga and matches IYKWIM. I think you do need a back up hob, certainly. The oven you can live without if it is really hot (and use the bbq and microwave if necessary)

I'd get a hob, and a microwave or microwave / grill thing, but I wouldn't bother getting another separate oven (it was already here when we moved in). I could manage without the oven through the summer.

I love the Aga. Never thought I'd take to it, but wouldn't be without now.

Never switched off,just turned very low. (Fact that it's in a basement kitchen with slate floor and worktops helps though.)

Also have a gas hob for fierce cooking!

sophy - we are hoping to get a new kitchen next year and I was thinking about just getting an electric hob - you know the ones with a glass surface so you can use them as a worktop most of the time ( we dont have gas where we live) . And getting a microwave with a grill oven thingie. It seems such a waster of space in a smallish kitchen to have a full oven which gets used about 3 times a year.Coz when its too hot ot have teh aga on, we tend just to have salad or meals cooked on the hob or grill.

we have a 4 oven aga so never need to use the elctric for back up when catering for loads of guests.

You will just love your aga when you get used to it....everyone does!!

My Gas Aga goes off in May and will comes on again in October time after its service. I have just had a new kitchen and had the old gas hob and gas oven replaced with a new gas hob and electric oven, I like that combination. My kitchen gets full sun from lunch time, I was crippled with the heat last year so off with the Aga this summer. Also Gas Aga is about £9 per week to run (according to British Gas) so where I can make any saving I think I ought to!

We never switch ours off but dd3 often manages to!
Large kitchen with stone floors and two o/s doors, so even this week has been no problem.
Dalesgirl, gas agas are more exspensive to run than oil and the thermocouples are more prone to fail. They are cheaper to buy tho I think!
