Dinner party ditherer

My problem is I have tons of food magazines, files of recipes and books too so can't make my bloody mind up! I have 5 friends coming over and I want to make them something lovely and even impressive, but preferably mostly cooked in advance. Think I have decided on pud (roast rhubarb with meringues and ginger cream), so can go for quite a substantial main. I would also like to do a starter and am probably thinking of a big sharing plate as have just realised I only have 4 starter-size plates.... I would quite like a one-pot idea as that means minimum hassle and can be done days before, but I am caught up in a state of indecision! Help!!
The only food off the menu is peanuts and sprouts....

What about a slow-cooked beef stew (nice one!) or spiced shoulder of lamb, with some veg thrown in?
