storing potatoes?

What is the best way to store potatoes? I have mine in a large basket, should I cover them somehow or keep them in the dark? They seem to sprout very quickly ... only last a few days, and I thought there might be some way of storing them so they last longer? tHANKS

they should be stored in the dark in hessian or paper bags. Keep them away from onions as that causes them to go off quicker too

You can get bags specifically for storing potatoes from Lakeland, hth

A cardboard box in a dark cupboard works for us. Line with newspaper if spuds are muddy. Our onions are in there too and we don't seem to have a problem, but we do get through spuds quite quickly!

The potato bags from Lakeland work really well......

You must store them in a cool dark dry place.

I keep mine inthe bottom of the fridge - it works well

Seona1973 · 13/02/2010 17:03

its advised not to keep them in the fridge as the cold temperature causes the starch to break down into sugars and makes them too sweet

I get them out of the plastic bags immediately, then put them in brown paper bags in a dark cool dry place (not in the fridge).

I use an old shoe box in the cupboard

Works really well. It's also a good excuse to buy new shoes/boots

Started to use an old pillowcase (well, they're all old but this is very old ) which works OK in a dark cupboard. not very stylish. I read that buying dirty potatoes will make them last much longer than if they are prewashed so when I have got thru the last of the supermarket ones I am going to see if the local farm shop does them.

Ivykaty44 · 13/02/2010 19:27

I just followed all the chefs I have worked with - who all kept the potatos in the bottom of the fridge...

I have never found that the potato gets sweet or had a problem with them

Silkflowersanne · 17/02/2010 14:04

I keep them anywhere where it is dark, in a paper bag. Without any light they dont seem to get the horrible eyes!!

just bought a hessian bag designed for potato storage from lakeland ........ wlil see if it helps prevent greeness/sprouting ... how long should potaotes last anyway?
