Bought coley by mistake, will it be nasty?

I meant to buy cod but picked up coley. Was going to do Madhur Jaffrey's tomato fish curry but won't bother if it will be rank!

Coley was something my mother gave to the cats so I've always thought it was a bit whiffy/grey/nasty.

I think it'll be fine in a curry.

It's being promoted these days (look in all the sleb chef books) as it's not got dwindling stock like cod etc and is more sustainable.

T'will be fine, and in a curry, no-one will notice!

Great, thought a curry might tone it down! Thanks and yes, better than cod.

Apparently the slightly grey colour is one reason why it isn't fashionable - won't make any difference to the taste though.
I've had all kinds of different fishes in my attempt to be sustainable (pollock, pouting, coley etc) and IME the kind of fish makes very little difference to flavour though sometimes texture is a bit different. Freshness is the most important factor with fish. If you remember coley being whiffy it was probably because it wasn't treated as carefully as cod and got left around longer.

Coley is fine. It's just cheap and plentiful. It has a slightly firmer texture than cod (which I actually prefer in tomato curry anyway).

Yum
