What herb (if any!) would you put in a basic veg soup?

I am making a basic veg soup - nothing fancy, stock and veg boiled until it tastes of somethingish with a some chili for interest but I was wondering which herb would go best. Any advice?

parsley or coriander leaf.

Basil.

wouldn't stir in fresh herbs until the very end but imagine loads of flat leafed parsley, chives, maybe even lovage if you have it (reminds me of celery) would be nice? depends on veg I suppose, basil and tomato are obvious partners

or you could make a bouquet garni to add while it is all simmering, just remember to remove before you blend (if you are going to blend)?

parsley.

It depends about the make-up of veg, but parsley is pretty fail-safe. This nice leek and potato soup uses parsley and it always tastes lovely- www.eatthechef.com/recipe.aspx?id=45

my standard soup is root vegetables, cup of red lentils, veg stock and a pinch of mixed herbs, salt and pepper.
Fresh parsley or chives goes with most things and then there are the obvious combinations like tomato and basil, carrot and coriander.
If you are going to add chilli then that will probably mask most herbie flavours anyway.

Basil, mint or parsley, depending on the veggies.

thank you for all the suggestions, I am thinking that next time I might leave out the chilli and try chives as that sounds quite nice. Not a big fan of parsley but that might be because i always associate it with sitting limply on a hot piece of meat maybe I should try it in veg soup!!
Will try some dry mixd herbs this time.

I would suggest cumin. I seems to use garlic and cumin the most when I'm cooking.

Although that is a spice not a herb, so I'll get me coat...

Depends what you like the taste of.

I suppose as you've added chilli then either ground cumin/coriander or fresh coriander at the end would be good. Altho then it just ends up tasting of coriander so it depends how much you like it.

I put thyme in everything because I love it. But not with chilli.
