Vegetarian main course for American supper?

BettyButterknife · 29/01/2010 16:41

I've been allocated the main course to take to an American supper next weekend, and it's a vegetarian meal.

Can anyone recommend something suitable? I have a few favourite recipes but have never done one of these before so it'd be good to get some tips as to what travels well, what goes down well as one of a combination of dishes etc.

How about this mushroom bourguignon? (But what is an American supper?

Americans love macaroni cheese.

The Americans I know always go on about yam pie. Apparently you don't make it with sweet potato (which I thought were our version of yams), but you can get a tin of some sort of yam puree.

Americans love squirty cheese in a can.

How about a can each?

What about tex mex. I'd do a vegetable chilli. Simple option would be to serve it with rice, but you could take wraps and taco shells and just get everyone to dip in and serve themselves. Grate some cheese, shred some iceberg lettuce and either a homemade or shop bought salsa to go with it.

I also agree with Mmeblueberry that the Americans do love macaroni cheese.

Ah, ok by American supper it's less cowgirls/hotdogs and more potluck - sorry, should've made that clear.

So each person brings a dish, which is what I'm finding tricky - I don't want to bring something that's a very specific 'genre' for want of a better work. I need something that will go with lots of other types of food and not clash...

Aha! I've heard of pot luck, always sounds like fun! The closest I've come to that was a pudding party where everyone brings a different pudding

Spicy black bean burgers with coriander salsa, yum

still hooked on that american theme!

I found an amazing recipe for pumpkin.

Basically butternut squash with chilli, orange zest, rosemary and breadcrumbs and it was bloody marvellous and a doddle to make!!

aubergine moussaka

another vote for mac and cheese.

google the martha stewart recipe ( calorific bomb) or buy kraft packs, just as well

or mexican burritos of course ( refried beans packed in rolled tortillas and baked with vast amounts of cheddar - monterrey jack for purists- cheese on top)

Jamie Oliver's mac and cheese from his new America book is really yummy.

Tex Mex also great.

Nelvana - they sound lovely.

Hoe about a big bowl of roasted vegetable cous cous?

Or a huge dish of dauphinoisse?

janeite · 02/02/2010 13:36

How not hoe
