It currently has onion, carrot, garlic, beef, red wine, black pepper, beef stock (oxo I'm afraid) and cornflour for hopefully making it go thick.

Any suggestions for additions?

I have tiger bread for dunking

I made a stew just like yours the other day - it was actually a Jamie Oliver recipe called "Jool's Favourite Stew" or something, and it included tomato puree, herbs, parsnips, butternut squash, garlic and a touch of lemon zest at the end as well.

It was alright. I sometimes make a stew which is a basic stew recipe with a couple of tablespoons of redcurrant jelly stirred into it near the end and it is delicious!

Herbs for stew?

Throw in rosemary, bay, thyme, and put parsley in at the end.

And chopped parsley in the suet dumplings too!
