Don't know how much you want to fork out but Lakeland do a train cake tin here- LINK

Madeira cake is good for decorating, it's a bit denser than normal sponge. I use the BBC recipe-ish- LINK I don't faff about with the lemon peel though, I just leave it in the oven until it's done. I know that's not very helpful, I'm a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of cook

If you are feeling really worried then this is a brilliant cheat.

Otherwise a standard cake recipe in a square or rectangle tin woudl work.

Standard recipe -
Take 3 eggs and weigh them.
beat together that weight of butter and sugar until fluffy, beat in the eggs and then gently stir in same weight of sifted self raising flour.
Bake 20 ish minutes GM5-6 but check with a knife as it depends on your tin.

You may need to adjust the amount depending on your tin as well but the measurements are easy enough to add to, just get another egg and weigh it!

Cool cake and cut into small rectangle for train and carriages. You can stick one 'block' on top of the other to make a taller train for the front. Then either cover in buttercream icing coloured with food colouring and stick on sweets for decoration. Make a funnel using a mini roll and liquorice circles for wheels.

MMMmm, I'm hungry now

at xpost link!

Oh, if you don't want to cook then most supermarkets do a plain madeira cake. On my profile there is a picture of a 'mouth' cake I made with ready made madeira cake and a pic of the 'inside' before I covered it (was in a rush!)

I made a train cake for my DS - check my profile pics. I made a square cake and bought a swiss roll. I cut the square cake in half, put the swiss roll on top, then made the driver's bit with the other bit of square cake. Iced it blue (used ready made buttercream icing), stuck on roll out icing for roof etc and used oreo cookies for the wheels.

It was delicious! And quite easy too!
