Very silly question about frosting

Sorry, about this question!
I have never made frosting for cake!! Tomorrow is DS's birthday party and I am going to bite the bullet and do the frosting myself.
I have seen a recipe with marscarpone cheese (I like soft frosting), the party is at 11, to make sure tha frosting is not a complete disaster I am planning to make the cake tonight and make the frosting tomorrow early morning (if it goes terribly wrong I'll have time to make some more).

How long will the soft frosting keep for out of the fridge? The party is not at home so I have to leave earlier and drive there, then wait for about 12:30 to feed the kids, so the cake and frosting will be waiting for at least 2.5 hours. I am having nightmares about giving tummy troubles to all the guests.

Tbh, if it is for kids, I would not do frosting with cheese - they probably wouldn't like it.

I would do chocolate/vanilla buttercream.

agree with bellavita
kids do like their buttercream and it's also going to be less of a hassle for you
