Toastie fillings - what's your favourite?

DS loves toasted sandwiches but I am fed up of cheese. And cheese and pickle. And cheese and chutney.

So what else can I put in a toastie? Must be vegetarian. When I asked my sister, she suggested Roses chocolates . I was hoping for something slightly more nutritious! Any suggestions?

Does he eat fish? Sardines (the ones in tomato sauce)... yum.

cordonbleugh · 07/01/2010 19:22

was going to say cheese and pineapple but see you're fed up of cheese!

ermmm bacon?

Swagger · 07/01/2010 19:24

Not doing very well are we.... my fish, your bacon. Baked beans?

DillieTantie · 07/01/2010 19:24

Mozzarella, tomato and pesto, sort of like an inside-out pizza?

sowhatitsonlysnow · 07/01/2010 19:25

Can't really help as we're a cheese & ham family

mamasmissionimpossible · 07/01/2010 19:27

Baked beans are nice, but messy,

wrigglershouse · 07/01/2010 19:29

cheese and beans

left over veggie bolognaise/chilli

ratatouille and mozza or feta

banana and honey or nutella

cheese, spring onion and chilli

plain cheese but various dips to scoop up with them

I love cheese and peanut butter but my husband says that's wrong

On a sl diff note a hot pita, split, spread thinly with tahini then stuffed with avocado, strong chedder and bacon is one of the most delicious things ever and is still pretty bloody good without the bacon...

Banana and cinnamon.

JaneiteIsAWimpyTeacher · 07/01/2010 19:32

I can't help you but am bumping for you, as veggie dd1 doesn't like cheese. So far she has had - marmite with a teeny weeny bit of cheese to stick it; nutella and banana; nutella and mango. She has agreed to try pesto and peppers with a teeny bit of mozerella (sp?) next time.

SuperBunny · 07/01/2010 19:32

Brilliant, thank you!

Lots of fab suggestions and different cheese is a good idea. I did do one with Brie and chutney which was quite good.

No fish, no bacon and DS won't eat beans. But I will

Baked beans are our fave here.

thereistheball · 07/01/2010 19:33

I asked about this on here a while ago. Someone suggested banana and peanut butter or nutella which is delicious but perhaps not what you were after?

I'd go for the inside-out pizza approach too, even though it involves cheese. You could add griddled courgettes or aubergines or peppers or olives (all of which would be really good with goats cheese instead of mozzarella); or humous and squished falafel (though this is really better in toasted pita bread with salad). Or you could do a variant on parmigiana with aubergines, tomato sauce and parmesan?

Goober · 07/01/2010 19:35

Proper strong cheddar like pilgrims choice and sliced apple.

nannynobnobs · 07/01/2010 19:40

Just remember- If you use sliced tomato in your toasties they take on all the qualities of napalm and will flop the whole slice out to burn a big red mark on your chin...

MisSalLaneous · 07/01/2010 20:13

Banana and think layer of chutney is my favourite. Dh hates it though, so perhaps try a small bite first.

MisSalLaneous · 07/01/2010 20:14

thin, not "think".

gloomgirl · 07/01/2010 20:17

peanut butter and jam
crack an egg onto the bread and toast
mushroom pate
falafals and humous?

AvadaKedavra · 07/01/2010 20:19

Have to say I rather like the idea of a Cadbury's Roses toastie I wonder which one would be nicest though?

mawbroon · 07/01/2010 20:27

I love left overs in a toastie. My faves are mince/gravy, haggis, chilli, bolognaise etc.

I don't know if you ever eat veggie versions of the above, but don't see any reason why they wouldn't work just as well.

Mashed tatties are nice too if you don't mind carb overload.

I cannot eat mash in a sandwich Mawbroon! I have eaten it on pizza and it is strangely acceptable but can't bring myself to eat a tattie sarnie.

I might try pesto and peppers tomorrow. And then will do the halloumi one since I have tons lurking in the fridge.

If sardines work, then I think other non-cheesy things should since sardines aren't sticky, are they? The toastie machine squidges the bread together. I wonder if hummous would work.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

ham, cheese and jam

don't knock it till you've tried it

JaneiteIsAWimpyTeacher · 07/01/2010 22:53

I know you said no cheese but how about feta and olives? Bet that's nice!

ZacharyQuack · 07/01/2010 22:56

Cream Corn, cheese (sorry), spring onion.
