Toastie fillings - what's your favourite?

DS loves toasted sandwiches but I am fed up of cheese. And cheese and pickle. And cheese and chutney.

So what else can I put in a toastie? Must be vegetarian. When I asked my sister, she suggested Roses chocolates . I was hoping for something slightly more nutritious! Any suggestions?

yangymack - I remember creamed corn in tins here many moons ago. I remember it because it was boaktastic.

I think it was ho ho ho green giant that made it, but seeing it's not something I would rush out to buy, I have no idea if it's still available or not....

tuna mayo might work- might help stick to bread?

ZacharyQuack · 08/01/2010 10:39

I'm in NZ. Sorry to recommend an exotic delicacy like cream corn!

LetThereBeRock · 08/01/2010 10:59

I've never tried creamed corn before but it sounds good.

I was looking at a AUS/SA/NZ,not that I'm any of the three, goods website yesterday and they have it on there.
I think I may order some, along with some sweets and give the toastie a try.

SuperBunny · 08/01/2010 11:14

Creamed corn is also a US thing.I think I like it but I can't remember.

Sainsbury's kidney beans in chilli sauce (from a tin) and cheese. You need a sandwich toaster thingy for this though as otherwise it gets really messy. But they are lovely

Tuna melt is my favourite. It I was making it for me, rather than a child, I'd add a little Tabasco too.

BadRomance · 08/01/2010 11:35

mozarella and salami

selsworld · 08/01/2010 11:36

my favourite is grated cheese, chopped onion and salad cream all mashed together, then put in a toasty on on toast, it is delicious.

CremeDeMenthe · 08/01/2010 11:36

Peanut butter and nutella (together).
DC are intrgued by the idea of Roses, we have two tins full to use up!

PictureThis · 08/01/2010 11:37

Cheese again sorry but I just love Cheese and onion toasties - that combination wins every time

MayorNaze · 08/01/2010 11:39

different cheeses make totally different sandwiches.

cottage cheese is lush, as is wensleydale.

and my name is not wallace

CremeDeMenthe · 08/01/2010 11:41

suggestions from my toastie maker instrctions include:
cheese apple sultana
curry
cream cheese & brocolli
cheese onion & mashed potato
sweet mincemeat
cherry pie filling

also suggest using pastry, pizza base or ciabatta.

AvadaKedavra · 08/01/2010 11:43

In the interests of gluttony science, I will bravely volunteer to try out a Roses (well QS) toastie and report back

I'm thinking that the green triangles would be nice, maybe the toffee fingers?

serenity · 08/01/2010 11:46

We got given some Wensleydale with cranberries over christmas (and a Panini maker as well!) and I've found toasted sandwiches made that are lush.

Apart from that we haven't done anything that hasn't been done already! Dcs are particularly fond of the banana/chocolate spread and cheese/jam combination though.

I love toasted Brie sarnies myself, and toasted 'mix of any cheese I can find' is nice too (halloumi, wensleydale and cheddar.. yum)

LetThereBeRock · 08/01/2010 12:01

I'm about to make a bacon, egg and cheese toastie.

Not that it's of much use to the OP but I'm hoping it'll be as good as the thought of it is.

treedelivery · 08/01/2010 12:02

Jam. It's like a cherry pie and completely yum.

MsDoctor · 08/01/2010 12:03

Banana...yummy.

SuperBunny · 08/01/2010 18:35

I am happy to report that Halloumi with olives is delicious.

I now remember putting mars bars in toasties as a student. Yum.

Strong cheese and cooking onion

abroadandmisunderstood · 08/01/2010 18:39

Apple slices and raisins with a shake of cinnamon. Heaven.

I wish I hadn't thrown ours out three years ago now.

CremeDeMenthe · 09/01/2010 17:48

I have a few apples to use up, I might just try that. Might gently cook the apples forst though.

GlastonburyGoddess · 09/01/2010 17:50
