Creme Brulee without a blowtorch - is it possible?

I have never made it before primarily because I don't have a grill, but I do have a paintstripper gun - do you think that will do?

Any tips please?

Use Delia's method - make the caramel separately in a pan and pour it over (don't make it too thick though or it breaks your teeth )

St Delia's method

Thanks, will have a look.

My recipe doesn't say the cream should be cold and firm before doing the sugar thing on top. Should it?

Can you sprinkle sugar on and put under the grill?

meltedmarsbars · 05/01/2010 12:26

I don't have a grill!

melted - I think the cream has to be cold in Delia's version because you're pouring hot caramel over the top, and if the cream was still warm (ie not set), the caramel would sink down into it.

Yes, good point there! [stupid me emoticon]

How much sugar do I sprinkle on top if I'm going for the paintstripper gun method? Thickly? Sparsely? (have located said implement in garage now)

Thanks!

(can you tell I've got an oversupply of sell-by-date double cream?)

Mmmm dunno I'm afraid.

BigBadMummy · 05/01/2010 12:56

using up sell by date double cream?

Google scones with lemonade.

Three ingredients: flour / lemonade / double cream

Fabulous. Best scones ever.

or you can use yogurt... but since you have cream ...

I would use a fair amount of sugar on them to be honest, if you want that lovely crunchy lid on them.

Well, I have to report that it IS possible to make some kind of crusty surface with a paintstripper gun!

You do need quite a thick layer of sugar.

It burns your tongue if you scoff the extra one you made before it has cooled enough!

Burp!
