Buggered if I know.

No nothing it's just wrapped up in a piece of muslin (wondering if the muslin is significant)sadly no microwave.

I'm absolutely NOT ringing my mum, pretty sure she's still quietly smirking at todays panic re collecting turkey.

How big is it?

If about a pound in weight or more, then allow about 2 hours steaming time. If less than that then about an hour would be fine.

It really doesn't matter if it steams for too long, so long as you top the water up and it doesn't boil dry. They are quite well-behaved!

It's got times on it,it's the steaming bit I'm not sure about-do I just lob it in a pan of boiling water or does it have to sit on something within the pan?

Either put it in a steamer (either fan steamer or separate one above pan) or if you don't have a steamer then put it in a large pan with water, but place a piece of crumpled up foil under the pudding, so it doesn't bump about on the bottom of the pan. Hope this helps!
