Why are sprouts so unpopular?

I love brussel sprouts. In fact they are my favourite vegetable. I'd happily eat a big plate of just sprouts for dinner, preferably refried in a little bit of butter and seasoned with aromat. Yummy!!!!

They have such a bad reputation though. They are the butt of many jokes, and they seem to be the most unpopular part of most people's Christmas dinner.

Am I the only person who likes sprouts? Why is such a delicious vegetable so widely hated?

I love 'em.

They are frequently served up over-cooked and lukewarm which probably puts people off.

IMoveTheStarsForChristmas · 20/12/2009 19:49

I'll eat them, but I don't really like them. Apparently they're nice with vinegar,

The after effects are pretty awful as well.

greensnail · 20/12/2009 19:49

I love them too. I think they're often served over-cooked though which is yuck.

DiamondHead · 20/12/2009 19:50

I think they're gorgeous.

I think everyone has memories of biting into water logged sprouts. Overcooked.
And they do make you fart.

piscesmoon · 20/12/2009 19:50

I love them!

GrimmaTheNome · 20/12/2009 19:52

Because they taste of sprouts.

Jux · 20/12/2009 19:53

We love them too. Agree with nickytwotimes, it's the grey/khaki watery mush that that gets served up as sprouts that puts people off.

They do make you fart though!

Beauregard · 20/12/2009 19:55

I love sprouts ,steaming hot with gravy and salt or refried in bubble and squeak mmmhh.

displayuntiltwelfthnight · 20/12/2009 19:56

I love them. Eat 'em all year round, never without a pack in the freezer, dh loves 'em, kids love 'em. We love 'em!

GrimmaTheNome · 20/12/2009 19:57

And at certain times of year, they make large tracts of the countryside (well, Bedfordshire) stink.

For me they are part of Christmas and help to ensure grannies part in the provision of the festive aroma.

piscesmoon · 20/12/2009 20:03

You can play the sproutifarts game here!!

mckenzie · 20/12/2009 20:04

we had a christmas lunch today in a local pub and the sprouts were the very best i have ever ever tasted! They were really small and cooked to perfection. DS and I were fighting over some on his sister's plate (she had a massive portion )

TheRedQueen · 20/12/2009 20:08

Because they taste bloody horrible, that's why!

Reality, my DH was just saying that, it is the same as some people have a natural aversion to coriander.
I Love coriander but hate bitter, fart smelling sprouts.

5inthesleighbed · 20/12/2009 20:19

I love sprouts! I always have a turkey, stuffing and sprout sandwich for my supper on Christmas day. It wouldn't be the same without one.

CuppaTeaJanice · 20/12/2009 20:19

I prefer them overcooked, so they go mushy and melt in your mouth. But I don't like al dente vegetables in general.

another lover - but never, ever overcooked!

Takver · 20/12/2009 20:25

I love sprouts, but we rarely have them cos they're a faff to grow and to prepare. They make the best bubble & squeak, though.
My dd came home from her school Christmas dinner most offended as she was on a table with 11 others, and 10 of them laughed at her for liking sprouts (and no. 11 didn't laugh, but still didn't have any).
I really like sprout tops too, used to buy them on the market in Cambridge when I lived there, but I don't know if they still do them these days.

GloriaInEccentrica · 20/12/2009 20:26

because they are fucking horrible.
